Introduction of a research information system (FIS)

Up to date, a central database for the university’s research data does not exist at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). In the absence of an integrated solution, research data are often collected manually and stored locally. Therefore, sorting and search possibilities for the university-wide research data are still missing. In addition, MLU researchers have not been able to export their recorded publication and research data as well as to publish their research output on the university's websites. Thus, the visibility and distinctiveness of research activities at the MLU is severely restricted. Financed by the Higher Education Pact 2020, the projected research information system (RIS) will allow the MLU’s administration to collect, manage and communicate all relevant research information in a harmonized manner as well as to combine all decentralized research data sources.

To effectively fulfill these tasks, the RIS shall meet the following requirements:
(i) compatibility with the core research data set (Kerndatensatz Forschung) according to the recommendations of the German Scientific Council,
(ii) unified, decentralized and user-friendly recording of research data (e.g., on research projects, publications, presentations, awards and patents),
(iii) user-friendly, job-specific query and evaluation options,
(iv) possibility of integrating other data sources (e.g., from IMS or bibliographical databases) and
(v) high data quality and traceability of the results.

In addition, the RIS is intended to provide MLU researchers and students with numerous benefits. In this regard, researchers will be enabled to automatically generate their personal publication lists and CVs as well as to re-use their various research data in virtual research environments. This allows the MLU’s scientists to use their recorded research information also for own purposes. Moreover, the RIS will support researchers with the necessary transfer of knowledge as well as the initiation of future research projects. For students and potential beginners, the RIS will provide a comprehensive source of research information based on targeted search options. Therefore, the RIS is intended to strengthen the external visibility of research activities and competence areas at the MLU.
